What Does Quarter Past Mean?

“Quarter past” is one of the most common everyday phrases used to describe time, and it’s also one of the easiest clock positions to recognise once you understand where it comes from.

Where the phrase comes from

An hour is made up of 60 minutes. If you divide that hour into four equal quarters, each quarter is 15 minutes long (60 ÷ 4 = 15). “Quarter past” simply means that one of those four quarters — the first one — has already passed since the hour began. So “quarter past six” means 15 minutes have passed since six o’clock.

What it looks like on the clock

When it is quarter past any hour, the minute hand points directly at the 3 on the clock face. This is because 3 × 5 = 15 minutes, matching the minute-interval rule covered in our 5-minute intervals guide. The minute hand has travelled exactly one quarter of the way around the clock, from the 12 to the 3.

The hour hand, meanwhile, will have moved a small distance past whichever hour it is — roughly a quarter of the way toward the next number, since a quarter of the hour has passed. You can read more about this movement in our guide to the hour hand.

How to write it digitally

On a digital clock, quarter past is always written with 15 after the colon. Quarter past four is 4:15, quarter past nine is 9:15, and quarter past twelve is 12:15. The hour number stays the same as the hour that has just passed.

Worked examples

Example 1: quarter past four. If someone says “it’s quarter past four”, the minute hand is on the 3 (15 minutes), and the hour hand is a little past the 4. Written digitally, this is 4:15.

Example 2: quarter past twelve. The minute hand is on the 3 and the hour hand has moved just a little past the 12, a quarter of the way toward the 1. Written digitally, this is 12:15.

Example 3: reading a clock. The minute hand points at the 3 and the hour hand is just past the 9. The hour is 9 and the minutes are 15, so it is quarter past nine, or 9:15.

Why this phrase is still used

Even though most digital devices show exact times like 4:15, phrases like “quarter past” remain common in everyday speech because they’re quick to say and easy to picture on a clock face. Learning to convert between the spoken phrase and the digital time is a genuinely useful real-world skill, not just a classroom exercise.

You may also hear other ways of saying the same time. Some people say “fifteen minutes past four”, and in American English “a quarter after four” is common. They all describe 4:15.

How it fits with half past and quarter to

An hour has four quarters, and the minute hand lands on a clear landmark at each one. At the start of the hour it points to the 12. Quarter past is the 3. Half past is the 6. Then quarter to is the 9, and the hand returns to the 12 for the next hour. Learning these four positions first gives learners solid anchor points for every other time.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes is a quarter past?

Fifteen minutes. It is one quarter of the 60 minutes in an hour.

Where is the minute hand at quarter past?

On the 3, a quarter of the way round the clock from the 12.

Is quarter past the same as 15 minutes past?

Yes. Both mean exactly 15 minutes after the hour. “Quarter past” is simply the shorter, more common way to say it.

Why is it called a quarter when it is 15 minutes?

Because a quarter means one of four equal parts. An hour split into four equal parts gives four sections of 15 minutes each.
