What Does Half Past Mean?

“Half past” is one of the most common phrases used when telling the time, and one of the first that children learn after “o’clock”. It becomes very easy to recognise once you understand the simple maths behind it and know exactly where the hands sit on the clock.

Where the phrase comes from

An hour contains 60 minutes. Half of that hour is 30 minutes (60 ÷ 2 = 30). “Half past” means that exactly half of the current hour has already gone by, and half is still to come. So “half past four” means 30 minutes have passed since four o’clock.

What it looks like on the clock

When it is half past any hour, the minute hand points directly at the 6 — straight down at the bottom of the clock face — because 6 × 5 = 30 minutes. The minute hand has travelled exactly half way around the clock.

The hour hand will be roughly halfway between two numbers, since exactly half of the hour has passed. This is one of the easiest hour-hand positions to spot, because it sits almost exactly in the middle rather than closer to either number. You can read more about how that hand moves in our guides to the hour hand and the minute hand.

How to write it digitally

On a digital clock, half past is always written with 30 after the colon. Half past nine is 9:30, half past two is 2:30 and half past twelve is 12:30. The hour number stays the same as the hour that has just passed.

Worked examples

Example 1: half past nine. If someone says “it’s half past nine”, the minute hand points at the 6 (30 minutes), and the hour hand sits roughly midway between the 9 and the 10. Written digitally, this is 9:30.

Example 2: half past twelve. The minute hand points at the 6 again. The hour hand has left the 12 and is halfway to the 1. Written digitally, this is 12:30. Notice that the hour hand is not on the 1 yet, because the hour is still twelve.

Example 3: reading a clock. The minute hand is pointing straight down and the hour hand is halfway between the 4 and the 5. The hour is 4 (the last number the hour hand passed) and the minutes are 30, so it is half past four, or 4:30.

A useful landmark

Half past is often one of the very first clock positions children learn to recognise, alongside “o’clock”, because the minute hand pointing straight down is so visually distinct. It is a great anchor point for estimating other times nearby — for example, “a little before half past” or “a little after half past”.

How it fits with quarter past and quarter to

An hour can be split into four quarters of 15 minutes each. Quarter past is the first quarter (15 minutes), half past is two quarters (30 minutes), and quarter to is the point three quarters of the way through (45 minutes), which is 15 minutes before the next hour. Seeing them together helps learners remember that the minute hand simply moves from the 12 to the 3, the 6, the 9 and back to the 12.

Common mistakes

Try it yourself

Work out each answer, then check it below.

  1. Write “half past four” as a digital time.
  2. Where does the minute hand point at half past any hour?
  3. The hour hand is halfway between the 10 and the 11 and the minute hand points to the 6. What time is it?
  4. What time is 30 minutes after 7:00?
  5. What time is half an hour after quarter past two?

Answers: (1) 4:30. (2) At the 6. (3) Half past ten, or 10:30. (4) 7:30, or half past seven. (5) 2:45, which we call quarter to three.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes is half past?

Thirty minutes. It is exactly half of the 60 minutes in an hour.

Is half past nine 9:30 or 10:30?

It is 9:30. Half past always uses the hour that has just passed, so the next hour only begins 30 minutes later.

Where is the hour hand at half past?

Halfway between two numbers. It moves steadily through the hour rather than jumping from one number to the next.

Do other languages say it the same way?

Not always. In German, for example, the half hour is named by pointing towards the next hour, so “halb drei” means 2:30. English uses the hour that has already passed.
