How TimeTutor Works

TimeTutor teaches you to read a clock one small step at a time. Each of the 150 lessons shows an analogue clock, the matching digital time and a short explanation. Read the explanation, look at the clock, then press Next to move on.

  1. Start with the clock legend. The panel on the left explains the hour hand, minute hand, second hand and the numbers and ticks on the clock face.
  2. Follow the lessons in order. They begin with the parts of the clock, then move through hours, minutes, five-minute intervals, quarter past, half past, quarter to, AM and PM, and seconds.
  3. Use the buttons. Previous goes back, Next moves forward, and Random picks a lesson for extra practice.
  4. Read the guides. Our Learn guides explain each topic in writing, with worked examples.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is TimeTutor for?

TimeTutor is designed for children who are starting to learn the time, usually around ages 5 to 9, but it is also useful for older children, adults and English language learners.

Is TimeTutor free?

Yes. All 150 lessons are free to use, with no account or sign-up needed. The site is supported by advertising.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can open the site and start straight away. We do not ask for names, emails or other personal details.

Can teachers and parents choose a lesson?

Yes. The Parent / Teacher button lets you jump straight to any lesson, which is handy for revisiting a topic your child finds tricky.

What is the difference between analogue and digital time?

An analogue clock shows time with hands on a round face. A digital clock shows it as numbers, such as 3:15. TimeTutor shows both together so learners can connect them. Read more in our guide to analogue vs digital time.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. TimeTutor works in any modern web browser on computers, tablets and phones.

About TimeTutor

TimeTutor is a free, interactive website that teaches children and beginners how to tell time using both analogue and digital clocks. Through 150 step-by-step lessons, learners practise reading the hour hand, minute hand and second hand on a traditional clock face, while seeing the matching digital time and spoken time (such as "quarter past three") update automatically.

Lessons cover everything from the basics — what each hand on a clock means and how the numbers work — through to more advanced skills like reading time to the exact minute and second, understanding clockwise and anticlockwise movement, and converting between analogue, digital and spoken time.

TimeTutor is designed for use by children learning to tell time for the first time, as well as parents and teachers looking for a structured, self-paced way to teach this skill. A built-in Parent / Teacher menu lets you jump straight to any lesson.
